Fantastic program.

I still use FTM for researching and day to day work but this is my little perfect file!!!

So easy to use and I wish it had been around when I started researching 10 years ago.

Well worth the money spent

Biggest Pro: Easy input of original source. British based records
Biggest Con: Haven’t found one yet

I enjoy using this software. initially it took a while to get use to the program but after sitting down and going though the tutorial which is short but very handy, i felt at home with it. I have not found any similar software which enables you to input the details from certificates and link them with the individuals. I still use FTM on a daily bsaes but being able to import the of certificates is a great idea which enables people who look at the tree to see the evidence fro which the data came from.

An Excellent piece of Genalogy software

Biggest Pro: Import of Certificates
Biggest Con: I did not have this program when i first started

I am UK-based and have used FTM (up to v16) for years for recording my research/tree etc. I have also sampled Custodian, Legacy, Family Historian and The Master Genealogist but I haven’t found them compelling enough (yet) to switch from FTM.

I have accumulated hundreds of certificates, census return pages and other source records which are referred to in the FTM file but which languish as hard copies in a filing system or are still somewhere on the internet.

I have found Geves to be superb complementary tool as it uses the information in source documents as the primary basis for creating “events” and individuals and building a tree.

Soft copies of many sources can be downloaded easily by the program from the internet - scanning the hard copies is also straightforward. Geves then enables all the corresponding events and people to be linked together directly ie events/source docs comes first, people This has proved to be a superb way of checking and reinforcing my FTM-based research as I have found gaps and inconsistencies which have been straightforward to follow up in many cases via the ability to download many documents from the internet.

Geves enables me not only to capture source docs digitally and store all of them in one place on my PC but also in a way which locks together all the information and people that they contain so that I know that my research documented in FTM is as watertight as I can make it.

Geves has also enabled me to capture and track “peripheral” people eg witnesses, informants etc who would otherwise just be noted somewhere but not properly followed up.

My family history research would now be seriously handicapped going forward without Geves: I may replace FTM with another program at some point in the future but would now never switch from Geves as a means of capturing my source docs. .

I strongly recommend anyone to download the free trial copy and give it a try

Biggest Pro: Captures, stores and uses information from source documents to build/support robust family tree
Biggest Con: Predominantly UK-related sources only

I’ve used Geves for a year or so now, and its a revelation. Particular features are the fact you can download census forms from Ancestry or Findmypast, with the images, and they go straight into the program. No need to do cumbersome source citations, or even retype the information, just select who each person is. You can scan certificates in as well, and enter all the information into forms, which creates all the person information for you.

You can look at lists of the fields of each type of certificates, which is very useful. The charts are good, and reports adequate, although a few more options would be nice. The historical mapping is very good.

I’m not sure whether Geves will suit everyone, its a bit different to your usual genealogy programs, but much easier when you get used to it.

Biggest Pro: Most of the data can be downloaded or entered as certificates
Biggest Con: The forms seem to be mostly UK based, I hope they do some other countries soon.
