Genes Reunited Review by Bernie,  Nov 7, 2013

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5

I have used genesreunited for many years and through it found many “cousins” who have been helpful with information and stories about my UK ancestors.

Biggest Pro: large contact base in UK
Biggest Con: too addictive - but isn’t all genealogy

This is a web site where you can build your tree for free and has a very reasonable membership fee if you wish to be able to contact others searching the same ancestors, or at least those with the same name and close year of birth.
It is fairly simple to use, you can add photos and extra data on those in your tree. If you so choose you can give permission for other Genes Reunited members to look at your tree see if names match with their ancestors. This can give you contact with others researching the same families and the posiblility of sharing data There is also a privacy feature where you can keep living family’s names and data hidden to others looking at your tree.

Searching in their BMD and Census database is done by purchasing credits as in some other genealogy web sites. The hot matches feature can sometimes be a help, but more often is too general to be a good match

Biggest Pro: Making contact with others researching the same families.
Biggest Con: Hot Matches often does not match closely enough

Genes Reunited is a very successful online service that matches similar family profiles in other members’ trees and encourages collaboration between members. It has a very substantial membership base and so the chances of finding matches is quite good.

Biggest Pro: The matching, collaborative process
Biggest Con: No automatic transfer of tree data when a match is found
