Loved the logical, systematic design. Easy, straightforward data entry.
Then OSX killed it. With no warning from Apple that so much software was going to go irremediably obsolete, I didn’t even get a chance to make a GedCom file of my 6,ooo+ entry family tree, so had to start over!

Biggest Pro: ‘Most everything
Biggest Con: Lack of OSX support

Versatile and very easy to use, unparalleled at producing simple but clear pedigree charts. I use Reunion which is wonderful but I really miss the ability to produce those simple charts in Gene which I then imported into my family history book as graphics, easily edited to isolate family lines, etc.

Biggest Pro: Pedigree charts
Biggest Con: Doesn’t work under OSX

Gene is the only genealogy program I feel really comfortable with. The hierarchical system of individual cards (for a person, place, event, document et c) which can be simultaneously opened and shuffled around in any number and combination, limited only by your screen size, makes possible operations that other software just won’t allow. Searching for clues, comparing any kind of data, editing several cards in parallel, or just trying to grasp the overall history of a branch of ancestors - it helps immensely to be able to display a lot of seemingly unrelated data all at the same time. Most if not all other genealogy software prohibits this by its stupid design using tabs or frames in a fixed window.
Graphing of trees is quite decent, export options fairly adequate, but while it is a wonderful program for its time, it would desperately need updating to an OS X version - and perhaps also some updates to import/export formats. Keep the GUI just as it is, though. Any change there is likely to be for the worse.

Biggest Pro: The ability to view and edit any number of “index cards” simultaneously
Biggest Con: No OS X support

I have been using this program for 10 years. It is not supported anymore. I would pay much to have this go to OSX. I use it now on classic environment on my new Mac but have problems. I also have emailed the creators with no response. He has a web site stating his intent to upgrade the system but seem he is a very busy man, and therefor no response. It is the best genealogy program out there because of the single sheet entry for each peson. You can add pictures and as many notes as needed.

Biggest Pro: Single sheet personal entry, unlimited notes and links.
Biggest Con: no update for OSX as of yet.

I love this software. I have been using it since 1997 or so and would gladly pay more than the 15.00 that I sent them as a shareware fee. It is clean and simple, not cluttered with all the bells and whistles like Reunion has. This software is so important to me that I purposely bought a laptop that could still run OS9, just for this genealogy program. Unfortunately I am going to be forced to give it up eventually, as OS9 is getting harder and harder to access. It would be wonderful if this was upgraded to OSX, but I don’t see any sign of that happening. An e-mail to the creators was unanswered. I have tried other “fancy” programs and have found nothing that works as well for me as Gene. Eventually I will probably have to switch to a Windows program and use Paralells or Fusion on a mac to run it.

Biggest Pro: Simple, singer person view, plenty of room for text and notes
Biggest Con: OS9 with no upgrade in sight
