I have used GEDitCom since mid 1990’s and it has always been a perfect program for all that I wanted to do. I was a MAC user before that so this was a very good fit for me. I have tried other programs but still come back to GEDitCOM.

This refers to GeditCom II. I moved from Windows to a Mac two years ago and transferred my data from The Master Genealogist to Reunion via GEDCOM. A disaster. Whose fault? Who knows? TMG used GEDCOM less than ideally. Reunion ditto.

It took months to sort out the issues. I’ve tried MacFamilyTree, Family Tree Maker, Heredis, iFamily. None preserved my data well.

So over to GeditCom II. It took quite a while to correct all the issues introduced by the other programmes, but now my data is as secure as can be because GeditCom understands GEDCOM like no other software. I can’t tell people just what a blessing John Nairn’s application is. It’s terrific. The help file is comprehensive. I haven’t yet found something that I want to do, but GeditCom II can’t.

It’s also heavily customisable. Not that i’ve really played with that yet.

I’ll never suffer data loss casued by my software again - unless of course, I move to some other programme that claims to be GEDCOM-compatible but isn’t. Never happen!

Biggest Pro: Data security, customisation, and ease of use.
Biggest Con: Doesn’t work on Windows. Is that a Con? Not in my house.

My brother and I have been using GEDitCOM for 10+ years and now I use GEDitCOM II. Other than the the online reviews touting so many customizable features and ease of use, all true, it’s preservation of GEDCOM data is second to none. And it will help the user search out and correct errors in the data easily. After spending decades doing research and 10’s of thousands of dollars, I want a program that will preserve our data and keep it fresh for my use and the use of the next generations. GEDitCOM does that for us. I highly recommend it. Also tech support is excellent and friendly.

Biggest Pro: Accuracy of preserving GEDCOM data
Biggest Con: It is a Mac only program, but one could purchase a Mac :-)

I use this program as a master database for my family research. It is easy to use, and John Nairn is always helpful if I run into a problem - which is not very often. A new beta version is available at the moment, and is very promising as a new release.
I find that I can’t switch to any other program. GEDitCOM does it all for me - websites, books, media etc.
